Most importantly, data loss caused by unpredictable disk failure could make businesses suffer from disastrous loss.
QNAP NAS, the best data storage center
Qsync for file synchronization
Multi-device file sync made easy
Qsync provides multiple ways of file synchronization and group file sharing, greatly enhancing the flexibility of teamwork and collaboration. Any file uploaded to a QNAP NAS will be made available for all linked devices, such as computers, laptops or mobile devices in order to boost productivity and to provide employees with access to the most-recent files with whatever device they use wherever they are.
Getting the files you need, when you need them
Modern businesses are no longer just shackled to desktops, and they rely on multiple devices including laptops, tablets and smartphones for everyday business needs both inside the office and when on business trips. But ensuring that everyone has easy access to files on these devices can be a challenge. There are many popular public cloud services that can address these issues, but some of them can be heavily limited – both in their storage capacity or number of devices/users that can be synced. They may also require costly subscription fees to access their services or to remove the aforementioned capacity restrictions. Another element to consider is that as you are transferring data to a third party when using a cloud service, businesses must be wary considering issues such as data protection legislation and confidentiality. Not to mention that larger cloud storage services are larger targets for hacking attacks.
File synchronization across multiple devices
Qsync turns a QNAP NAS into a safe data center for file synchronization with a large storage capacity. There are no extra costs involved, and every file uploaded to the NAS will be made available for all linked devices, including desktops, laptops and mobile devices. Qsync is especially useful for frequent travelers to manage files and ensures that they always have the most updated files on their devices. Qsync provides multiple ways of file synchronization and group file sharing, greatly enhancing the flexibility of collaboration.
Benefits of Qsync
No extra costs or space limitations
Qsync is an integral part of a QNAP NAS and does not require any extra fees or subscription costs. The storage space is limited only by the total capacity of the NAS.
Total control over your data
As Qsync is on your QNAP NAS, you do not have to send it through third parties during file sync. This way you remain in control of how your data is used and transmitted.
Save up device storage
Qsync allows you to remove files on one device without affecting the copies stored on others that are linked with the NAS. However, when someone updates the files you deleted on another device, you can still retrieve them from the Qsync folder.
Sync to all your devices
Whenever you add, edit, delete or rename a file on one computer, the change applies to all others linked with your NAS, so you have exactly identical contents on all your devices.
Quickly share files with download links
Create download links to share files with people, even if they do not have a NAS account. This greatly reduces the time in creating user accounts just to share low-priority documents with people.
Sync shared folders
Synchronization can also be enabled on shared folders (with well-thought-out privilege settings by administrators) to greatly increase group work efficiency. Everyone with access to those shared folders can get the synchronized files in a timely manner.
Share team folders with different groups of people
Your life is connected with different groups of people. You can create sub-folders within the Qsync folder, and share each with different groups of NAS users as a file exchange center. Everyone in the same sub-folder is always kept up-to-date with the latest version of the files.
Versioning control
With Qsync versioning control, all file revisions are saved as a copy for future retrieval. With file versioning, there’s no need to worry about files being overwritten or mistakenly deleted. Even the files that have been deleted from the recycle bin can be retrieved.
Apply settings to all devices
With the central configuration mode, you can directly manage user privileges, set up Qsync client configurations, and apply customized or default settings effortlessly to all devices at once from one device.
Remotely erase the Qsync folder
If your NAS is stolen or lost, you can remotely erase the Qsync folder to avoid data breaches, and even restore it after you have retrieved the device.
Virtual JBOD
Achieve the best capacity utilization among multiple QNAP NAS units
VJBOD (Virtual JBOD) is a capacity expansion technology that allows surplus storage resources of a smikBox NAS to be used to expand the storage space of another smikBox NAS, enabling you not only to create virtual storage pools and volumes on your local NAS, but also to achieve the highest storage utilization of the multiple smikBox NAS in your environment.
On-demand, instant storage capacity allocation
When I have multiple smikBox NAS units, or when I need to expand capacity on-demand, how do I achieve the best utilization of NAS storage?
With VJBOD users have a high degree of flexibility and expand-on-demand capabilities that brings several benefits and practicalities – especially for the storage architecture of small and medium-sized business. Use smikBox VJBOD to instantly allocate storage space from another smikBox NAS as an iSCSI LUN. Then use the iSCSI LUN to create storage pools, take snapshots, make a clone from snapshots or index multimedia files into the media library on the local NAS.
Building high-performance VJBOD storage with super-high-speed 40GbE networking
VJBOD is JBOD based on software-defined storage, offering greater flexibility with online capacity expansion over traditional JBOD expansion. Natively supporting iSCSI SAN, VJBOD ensures high-speed transfers with 10GbE/40GbE network connectivity. Compared with single-LAN transmission, a QNAP NAS equipped with multiple Ethernet ports supports port trunking (link aggregation) increasing the bandwidth and providing fail-safe connectivity in the event of connection failure. With port trunking, network traffic will also automatically achieve load balancing for every connected device.

System backup and recovery
For professionals who require a more efficient way to back up their systems, QNAP NAS supports well-known third-party backup software. For example, Acronis® True Image™ creates an exact duplicate image of the live disk drives, including the operating system, all configuration files, programs, updates, and databases. Those images can be easily transferred to the secure QNAP NAS as backups, and restored anytime for disaster recovery to minimize downtime.
Note: Different third-party backup software may provide different functions. Please consult your software vendors for more details.
Business critical backup and recovery
Organizations that run servers in multiple locations with limited IT staff demand efficient and reliable software to back up their business-critical data. For example, Commvault® provides a complete, integrated approach to backup, restoration and archiving important files, applications, endpoints, databases, and virtual machines with multiple backup engines under a single interface. While Commvault can use a QNAP NAS as storage, with Virtualization Station, the NAS is capable of becoming “storage as server” with reduced TCO by hosting Commvault software on a virtual machine and directly storing backed up data in the same place.

File backup
Commvault offers a streamlined data protection, backup and recovery solution. It supports scheduled backup for easier management and block-level backup to improve operational efficiency. Commvault can also archive long-term data to secondary storage to free more space on primary storage or client servers, helping optimize storage resources across the enterprise.

Database backup
Commvault enables backup, recovery and cloning/replication of different types of databases, such as Oracle® or Microsoft® SQL Server®, to protect your environment with timely failover if a database goes down. Your database appliance is protected and ready for recovery action whenever needed to guarantee 24/7 service uptime.

VM backup
Commvault supports the backup of virtual machines using VMware®, Microsoft® Hyper-V®, Citrix® XenServer™ hypervisors and Red Hat® Enterprise Virtualization. It enables efficient VM provisioning, migration, disaster recovery, archiving and retirement. With deduplication, VM backup time is greatly reduced while duplicate blocks of data are eliminated. This allows organizations to optimize storage use and to reduce network traffic with better resource efficiency.
Remote Backup and Expansion Unit Roaming
Complete solutions for remote backup and data migration
QNAP NAS provides not only all-encompassing backup solutions, but also a whole range of methods for fully backing up the contents of the NAS, adding an extra layer of protection for your data in the event of disaster recovery.
When “Plan B” is not enough…
There are few greater priorities to a company or organization than files & data, and no matter how many layers of backup and data recovery options a company has, they should always be looking for newer and easier ways of protecting, backing up and restoring data just in case the worst should occur. While traditional backup solutions for a NAS would be portable hard drives or other devices, they have the risks of getting lost, being inconvenient to maintain latest backup versions, or having insufficient capacities to handle huge amounts of data. And for network-based backup methods, it may be inefficient to consume huge amounts of bandwidth for a vast number of small files or a single large data file.
Benefits of QNAP remote backup options
Backing up data in real-time or a scheduled basis to remote servers or cloud accounts can greatly help in providing coverage for “worst case scenarios” and other unforeseeable disasters. The option to physically migrate the NAS contents via JBOD also provides a potentially quicker and zero-bandwidth solution for backing up the total contents of a NAS.
RTRR and rsync
Data on the NAS can be backed up to another remote QNAP NAS or FTP server on a real-time basis via QNAP’s RTRR service, or a standard rsync server on scheduled basis. With RTRR, the source NAS monitors files (including files in Qsync and Time Machine backup folders) and synchronizes the changes to the destination server.
QNAP’s RTRR supports many advanced features, including:
Cloud
QTS offers easy-to-use, feature-rich, and secure cloud backup solutions that allow you to back up your data to a variety of enterprise-class public cloud storage services including Microsoft® Azure, Amazon® Glacier, Amazon® S3, ElephantDrive®, Google Drive™, Dropbox® and IBM® SoftLayer. It also supports various private cloud storage solutions that are compatible with OpenStack Swift, and WebDAV.
JBOD Migration
It may take a lot of time to move a vast number of small files or a single large data file, especially in a slow network environment. JBOD migration function, available in QTS 4.2 as QJBOD Express (JBOD enclosures roaming), on the QNAP NAS provides a secure and convenient way to move your data to other NAS devices via compatible expansion enclosures.
Note: To complete data migration via JBOD enclosures, your NAS must support JBOD configurations, and RAID groups of storage pools cannot cross multiple enclosures.
Simplify Volume & LUN Restoration with Snapshots
Prevent data loss with snapshots
Snapshots allow your QNAP NAS to record the state of the system at any time. If an unexpected situation arises on your system, you can revert back to a previous state that the snapshot has recorded. The Storage Manager adds an easy-to-use web-based snapshot tool for you to easily back up and restore data back to any point of time to prevent loss of important data.
Modern businesses need modern solutions for backup and restoration
With files and data being all-important for the long-term success of businesses, IT administrators need all-encompassing solutions for backing up and restoring both important files and the system itself. Businesses also need to be able to react quickly for backing up and restoring important files and system information, and also need the comfort of knowing that these backups can be easily replicated to other servers/NAS with no extra complications.
Benefits of Snapshots
The Storage Manager features numerous tools for taking snapshots and restoring files and data as necessary. Individual files can be easily restored if they are accidentally deleted or saved over, and the entire system can be easily reverted to a previous, healthier state if necessary. Snapshots can be taken by schedule or manually and then backed up to other NAS or servers in order to provide an all-encompassing backup solution.
Windows Previous Versions support
Snapshots enable Windows users to restore files directly from File Explorer simply by right clicking on files, saving time and effort without requiring help from IT administrators.

Mitigate the threat of ransomware with QNAP NAS
Make a recovery plan against encryption-based locker viruses
Ransomware is a rising threat against both business and home users that targets computers and network-based devices. A simple yet effective method of mitigating the threat of ransomware is to ensure that you always have up-to-date, remotely-stored backups. QNAP NAS is an ideal backup center that includes comprehensive backup features and supports point-in-time snapshots to help individuals and organizations protect important data, restore files, and avoid downtime.
It’s incredibly fast and by the time the warning message had appeared on the screen it had already encrypted everything of value on the hard drive – it happens in seconds.
BBC News, April 2016
What is locker ransomware?
Locker is a file-encrypting ransomware (Cryptolocker, CTB Locker, TeslaCrypt, and others) that encrypts files found on local drives, removable drives, mapped network drives, and even Dropbox mappings. Victims will be extorted a ransom to decrypt the affected files, or they will be unable to open the affect files ever again.
… And why is locker ransomware so troublesome?
- Ransomware is typically spread through phishing emails, and mostly hidden in emails as attachments like .zip, .pdf, .doc, .exe, .js files, and more. It is difficult to identify, and self-spreading.
- Traditional antivirus may not detect next-generation ransomware.
- Locker ransomware uses asymmetric encryption or more advanced encryption methods which can be difficult (if not impossible) to break locally.
- Victims are forced to pay (normally by untraceable means) to restore their files, or they face losing them forever.
Back up with QNAP NAS to save your files
While the first line of defense against being affected by malicious software is being careful and practicing sensible usage habits (regularly updating your software, not opening untrustworthy emails, not visiting unknown websites, etc), you should always remember to back up your data.
QNAP NAS provides a simple solution for backing up/restoring files and data. Its Linux-based QTS operating system makes it more secure than Windows® systems that are more at risk from being attacked. Moreover, the native support for point-in-time snapshots that are operated separately from the file system makes QNAP NAS a reliable backup solution for reacting quickly for backing up and restoring important files and system data.
Snapshots: React quickly for backing up and restoring
Snapshots record the metadata of files outside the file system and allow users to preserve and restore multiple versions of the same file, folder or even the entire volume. If ransomware attacks or an unexpected situation arises on your system, you can quickly and easily revert back to the previous state that the snapshot has recorded.
Note: Snapshots require a QNAP NAS with at least 4GB RAM.
Steps to restore your files with snapshots
QNAP Lab simulated a ransomware attack, and confirms that the following steps are suitable for recovering data with QNAP snapshots.

Application container technology simplifies many methods for both software architecture and development processes, and provides benefits for Internet of Things (IoT) deployment to create a real-world impact. QNAP redefines NAS for IoT, providing comprehensive “QIoT Containers” for QNAP’s Container Station platform to help quickly structure your IoT environment and deployment.
Internet of Things. The next revolution is here.
The “Internet of Things” is a giant network of “things” including computers, smart devices, wearables, home appliances, and other internet-connected devices. The relationship will be between people-people, people-things, and things-things, and a large amount of data will be collected and exchanged throughout the IoT ecosystem in order to trigger events and being further analyzed for insights that can improve efficiency, reduce waste or increase profits.
What about data storage for IoT?
Now everything is connected to the Internet, and automatically-generated data is constantly growing. You may resort to public cloud services to store IoT data, but the storage cost could be considerable, and there are also privacy and security concerns that must be addressed. If valuable data is stored outside of your company/organization, it also leads to potential control and ownership issues.
You need a private cloud to backbone your IoT
Taking these critical drawbacks of public cloud services into consideration, a private cloud offers a more reliable and cost-effective solution to support IoT architecture. QNAP NAS provides high storage capacity and features various protocols and security functionalities to perform as an ideal IoT platform. The native support for handy containerized apps that can facilitate IoT development and implementation makes it an even better choice for streamlining infrastructure and services.
Agile IoT model: use containers to build a microservices architecture
Microservices is an approach to develop single large software as coupled smaller services to serve a business goal. Containers naturally lend themselves to supporting the same characteristics outlined earlier for microservices-based architectural patterns as applied to IoT systems. Supporting the essential attributes required of IoT, such as loosely-coupled, independently evolving and deployable components, containers are such a good fit for microservices with the capabilities to enable incremental deployment and updates of those services as required by business or customers. This means you can do a better job of modeling a business process in software.
Rapidly design your own IoT stack
Design your own IoT stack with “QIoT Containers”. Creating your own private IoT cloud platform is as easy as selecting a container for each stage of your IoT backend and installing it in Container Station.
QNAP Container Station exclusively integrates LXC and Docker® lightweight virtualization technologies. SSD Cache Acceleration
Improving the performance of a QNAP NAS with a SSD Cache
Adding an SSD cache to a QNAP NAS is a brilliant way to increase the performance of your storage while maximizing capacity, minimizing costs, and requiring almost zero effort to do so.

When you hit a performance wall…
A growing number of everyday applications require greater performance to react to business and organizational changes. And no matter how fast the processor or how high the RAM capacity, the speed and response times of the hard drives in a NAS will always be a decisive factor in system performance. Conventional logic would just be to populate the NAS with faster hard drives or SSDs, but this can lead to greater expenditure and constricted storage capacities – not to mention requiring a lot of time and effort to do so. This leaves IT administrators under pressure to increase system performance without impacting the budget, the current system capacity, or detracting resources from their other projects.
Benefits of QNAP SSD Cache options
An SSD cache can greatly help in providing the performance necessary for demanding applications as well as improving the overall system workflow. It also provides an affordable and easy-to-install method for upgrading a NAS.

Uncompromising performance for demanding applications
The SSD cache feature on QNAP NAS accelerates IOPS performance by up to 10 times and reduces latency by 3 times for storage volumes. It is perfect for IOPS-demanding applications including databases and virtualization to significantly improve overall workflow.

Budget friendly with maximized capacity
Building an all-SSD NAS is not only economically unfeasible, but it would severely constrain the total storage capacity of the NAS. By using an SSD cache, the capacity of the NAS is maximized while at the same time providing the immediate benefits of SSD technology.

Easy to set up and install
An SSD cache can be set up by simply installing SSDs into designated bays in the NAS, and then by following a few steps in the Storage Manager. No complicated steps or extra software is required.

Qtier™ Technology Drives Auto Tiering
Constant optimization of data across storage tiers
Qtier™ Technology empowers automated-tiering storage solutions that automatically moves hot data to high-performance storage tiers and cold data to lower-cost, higher-capacity drives, allowing businesses to enjoy exceptional application performance and lower TCO of storage at the same time.
Answers your demand for storage efficiency
As the price of solid-state drives (SSD) becomes more favorable, the demand for high-performance storage increases. With the advantages of high IOPS and low response times, SSDs improve the performance of data center applications that require fast and consistent performance. However, as the cost per gigabyte of an SSD is still higher than conventional hard drives (HDD), it is still more economical to use HDDs to store large amounts of cold (rarely-accessed) data.
To answer the demands of enterprise storage, QNAP has designed Qtier (QNAP auto-tiering) Technology that incorporates the speed of SSDs and capacity of HDDs on one NAS system. Qtier can automatically migrate data based on how frequently data has been accessed using an industry-leading 12Gb/s SAS controller. It improves overall system performance under the most complex, mixed workloads and server applications while providing high-capacity storage for cold data.
Intelligent data management
Qtier, a multi-tier storage management system, automatically moves the most active data to high-performance drives while less active data is migrated to high-capacity drives. This alleviates the burden on administrators by supporting tasks of performance pre-estimation, layout design, and relocation of data according to performance and budgets.
Enable Auto-tiering when creating a Storage Pool
To achieve the required level of performance and cost benefits, data is categorized based on access frequency. Service levels such as response times or runtime must be measured and evaluated in advance to decide which data must be stored at a given time in a certain tier.
QNAP auto-tiering architecture
Data migration based on Transaction-based Update
Based on the sorting results of calculation that developed by QNAP, the NAS will automatically move data blocks with higher weights to higher tier (e.g. moving data blocks from HDD RAID Group to SSD RAID Group). Here data migration and metadata updates will not interfere with normal IO; therefore, transaction-based updates will avoid problems with data integrity.
You can get the statistics of all data waiting to be processed as well as processed data in this phase. If the administrators need to do administrative tasks or there are bandwidth requirements for external connections, they can stop data migration in this phase. Furthermore, assigning weights can help adjust bandwidth allocation or alleviate congestion between external IO and internal data migration.
Benefits of using Qtier Technology

Ideal for complex virtualized environments
With Qtier Technology, QNAP NAS* provides a tiering solution that realizes the optimal storage efficiency and boosts performance, making it the best and most cost-efficient storage solution for environments like virtualization that contain dynamically-changing workloads.
Activate Qtier in your QNAP NAS
The goal of auto-tiering in a QNAP NAS is to optimize the use of the storage infrastructure by simultaneously improving storage utilization and performance:
- Move frequently used data onto fast disks for high-availability or high I/O cache throughput
- Move less frequently used data onto low-cost, high-capacity disks for better cost efficiency
3 levels of tiered storage
Qtier offers a 3-tier configuration: ultra-high speed (SSD), high speed (SAS) and high capacity (SATA/NL-SAS) for a combination of different disk drives.
Detailed and visualized statistics for performance analysis
Historical data assists users in performance tuning and storage provisioning, enabling the accurate adjustment of auto-tiering policies.
User-defined policies for better auto-tiering efficiency
Policy-defined auto-tiering enables dynamic reallocation of data corresponding to the performance requirements of the data or applications in addition to scheduling and prioritization of data migration.
Qtier with SSD Cache for around-the-clock acceleration
Qtier fully supports concurrent tiering and SSD caching. In this mode, Qtier constantly monitors I/O activity and keeps active data that requires small, mostly-random, read/write operations in SSD Read-only or Read-write cache and other data in the tiered storage automatically moving data between the appropriate tiers. QNAP unified and tiered storage is an intelligent, automated storage system for managing data placement to help optimize performance and cost requirements in multi-tier configurations.

QNAP 10GbE NAS Solution
Improving productivity with a QNAP NAS featuring 10GbE Connectivity
A 10GbE (10 Gigabit Ethernet) network is essential for businesses that demand high bandwidth for virtualization and fast backup and restore for an ever-growing amount of data. QNAP provides a range of 10GbE-ready NAS as an affordable and reliable storage solution for 10GbE environments.
Insufficient bandwidth for increasingly virtualized environments
Traditional networks have utilized evolving standards of Ethernet (including 100Mb to 1Gb), and until quite recently 1GbE has been considered sufficient enough to manage most day-to-day tasks in conventional IT infrastructures. With the rise of virtualization and the cloud however, 1GbE can potentially be a huge bottleneck that can stifle innovation and prevent organizations from improving and developing necessary virtualized environments to take their business further.
Benefits of 10GbE Connectivity
10GbE connectivity delivers ten times as much bandwidth as 1GbE, allowing for greater deployment of services and providing an immediate boost to overall network performance. Many QNAP NAS series are designed with 10GbE readiness, and can be immediately upgraded by purchasing and installing a 10GbE network adapter. QNAP NAS are also available with 10GbE as standard.
Unleash the full potential of virtualization
Modern IT infrastructures are increasingly relying on virtualized servers and applications to replace physical servers and equipment. QNAP NAS are VMware® Certified, Citrix® Certified, and Microsoft® Hyper-V Compliant in order to allow organizations to leverage all the benefits from virtualization and to flexibly deploy virtualization environments. With 10GbE readiness this virtualization potential can be fully realized and an increasing number of services consolidated into virtualized environments.

Improve overall network performance and everyday tasks
With ten times the bandwidth of 1GbE, normal day-to-day tasks of organizations will see an immediate benefit. Backup and software deployment tasks to multiple workstations can be carried out without impacting network performance, and large-data applications will greatly improve with a major speed increase.

Highly-efficient storage for video editing
Digital video production produces a huge amount of data that requires high performance RAID storage. Editing videos also requires an enormous amount of bandwidth that will choke conventional 1GbE networks. A 10GbE QNAP NAS has the ability to quickly store and edit files directly over the network, and also provides the scalability and compatibility to greatly improve the IT infrastructure of digital video studios.

Proxy Server
Optimize, secure and manage network bandwidth
QNAP’s Proxy Server can greatly assist in saving bandwidth and increasing network utilization. By using a high-capacity QNAP NAS as a proxy server, online resources can be efficiently accessed with greater cost-savings and productivity, and network security can be enhanced at the same time.
Web cache for saving time and bandwidth
Using the Internet for our daily work consumes significant network resources and organizations with groups of members can generate enormous network traffic. This means more time and greater bandwidth needed for organizations to access Internet resources. Proxy Server features a web cache for improving web response time and access efficiency as multiple users utilize the limited available bandwidth. QNAP NAS offers an ideal high-capacity storage solution for Proxy Server to store cached web resources that are frequently accessed. This content can then be directly served from the NAS when other members want to access the same content, without needing to access the internet. This increases the web response time and saves bandwidth in return. Over time, the productivity gains can be significant!
Note: The cache function is not supported for HTTPS-based web requests.
Define access rules for additional security
Proxy Server supports flexible access controls for classifying incoming client connections and access rights for Internet resources. For instance, organizations can implement access controls to block bandwidth-intensive websites and certain websites during office hours. Mastering P2V
Convert a PC/server to a virtual machine
Virtualization Station on QNAP NAS can easily run virtual machines that have been converted from physical PCs or servers, allowing users to consolidate their IT infrastructure, easily back up and restore important systems, benefit from high performance & storage capacity, and save on purchasing and maintaining hardware.
When physical servers become obsolete…
With constantly advancing technology, many businesses and organizations are facing the same problem – the generation gap of hardware and software. Previously organizations adopted conventional physical servers, and hardware expenditures rose with their growing IT needs. As time passes, the software on these systems becomes outdated or even unsupported by their developers (for example, Windows XP and Server 2003) and the servers themselves will be discontinued by their manufacturer or lack support for new hardware. The generation gap of hardware and software similar to these situations may greatly impact the operations of businesses and organizations.
VMware® vCenter™ Converter™ simplifies P2V
VMware, the cloud and virtualization services provider, offers professional software that helps businesses to deploy flexible and efficient virtualization applications. Its VMware® vCenter™ Converter™ can convert physical machines into virtual machines. Simply install it on your PC/server, and you can directly export the converted virtual machine to a Hypervisor, or import the .vmx file to a QNAP NAS for use with Virtualization Station. » Tutorial
